About Fisherman’s Oasis — Petersburg, Alaska

Our Story
Fisherman’s Oasis was born from a simple but deeply held belief: the extraordinary waters of Southeast Alaska should be accessible to anyone who loves the outdoors, not just those who can afford a full-service guided charter. We started right here in Petersburg, Alaska, a town that has built its identity around the sea, around hard work, and around sharing the abundance of the North Pacific with everyone willing to make the journey north.
Our founders grew up on these waters. They learned to read the tides on Wrangell Narrows, found their first halibut on the flats of Frederick Sound, and discovered the magic of Southeast Alaska the same way most locals do, by simply getting out there and exploring. That lived experience forms the foundation of everything we do at Fisherman’s Oasis, and it shows in every interaction we have with our guests.
Why Petersburg?
Petersburg, AK is sometimes called “Little Norway” for its deep Scandinavian roots and its proud commercial fishing heritage. It is a working fishing town in the best sense of the phrase, where the boats are real, the fish are plentiful, and the people who live here actually know what they are talking about when they point you toward a productive spot. There is nothing touristy or manufactured about it. Petersburg is the genuine article.
Situated on the northern tip of Mitkof Island at the convergence of Wrangell Narrows and Frederick Sound, Petersburg sits at the heart of some of Southeast Alaska’s most productive marine waters. The surrounding area offers Pacific halibut, multiple salmon species, lingcod, rockfish, Dungeness crab, and shrimp, all within easy reach of town. Add in the glacier-carved fjords, old-growth Sitka spruce, and the regular presence of humpback whales and Steller sea lions, and you have one of the most remarkable places in the entire state to spend time on the water.
Local Knowledge You Can Count On
When you rent from Fisherman’s Oasis, you are not just getting a boat. You are getting the benefit of years of accumulated local experience on these waters. We know which spots are producing this week, which salmon runs are coming in strong, and which coves are worth the extra fuel to reach. We share that knowledge freely with every guest because our goal is not simply to rent you a boat for a day. Our goal is to make sure you have a genuinely great time out there.
Petersburg is a small town, and our reputation is everything to us. We only recommend tactics, spots, and gear that we would use ourselves. We do not oversell what the fishing will be like, and we are not shy about giving honest advice even when that means saying it has been slow this week and here is what might be working better. That kind of candor is rare, and our guests consistently tell us it makes a real difference to their experience.
Our Mission
Our mission at Fisherman’s Oasis is straightforward: provide safe, reliable, well-maintained boat rentals that give our guests meaningful access to the remarkable natural world of Southeast Alaska. We want every person who rents from us to leave with stories worth telling, maybe a cooler full of fish, and a strong desire to come back and do it again.
We are committed to operating responsibly and respecting both the fisheries that make this region so special and the communities that depend on them. Sustainable fishing practices matter to us, and we encourage all of our guests to follow Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations carefully, to handle fish with care whether keeping or releasing them, and to treat the marine environment with the same respect that we do.
The Waters We Call Home
The marine environment surrounding Petersburg is staggeringly beautiful. Humpback whales breach in Frederick Sound. Steller sea lions haul out on rocky points just miles from the harbor. Bald eagles nest in the old-growth Sitka spruce that line the shoreline above the tide line. Dall’s porpoise ride the bow waves of boats passing through the Narrows. Sea otters wrap themselves in kelp off the reefs near Mitkof Island. These are not rare encounters around here. They are simply part of a typical day on the water.
We get to call this home, and we never take it for granted. Every day we send guests out onto these waters is a genuine privilege, and we approach that responsibility with gratitude for the extraordinary place Southeast Alaska is. When you spend time on the water with Fisherman’s Oasis, you are experiencing something that most people only ever dream about.
