How to Get to Petersburg, Alaska

Petersburg sits on the northern tip of Mitkof Island in the heart of Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. It is one of the most authentic fishing communities in the state and well worth the journey. There are two primary ways to reach Petersburg: by air or by ferry through the Alaska Marine Highway System.

By Air: The fastest option for most visitors is to fly into Petersburg James A. Johnson Airport (PSG), which receives daily scheduled service from Alaska Airlines via connecting flights through Juneau, Ketchikan, or Wrangell. Regional carriers including Alaska Seaplanes and Island Air also provide regular floatplane and wheeled aircraft service connecting Petersburg to Juneau, Ketchikan, Wrangell, and surrounding communities. Flight times are short and the aerial views of the Inside Passage are spectacular.

By Ferry: The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) provides regular ferry service to Petersburg, offering a scenic and affordable way to travel through the Inside Passage. This is especially popular for visitors bringing vehicles or those who want to experience the journey as part of the adventure. Ferry schedules vary by season, so check the AMHS website well in advance to plan your route and reserve space.

From Nearby Communities: Petersburg is easily accessible by small aircraft or floatplane from Wrangell (approximately 30 miles south), Ketchikan, Sitka, and Juneau. Charter floatplane services are available from several regional operators for private or on-demand travel between Southeast Alaska communities.

When to Visit

Fisherman’s Oasis operates seasonally, with our peak rental season running from May through September when fishing conditions are at their best and weather is most favorable. June, July, and August are the busiest months, offering the longest daylight hours and the widest variety of fish available. We recommend booking as early as possible for summer dates, as availability fills quickly during peak season.

Spring (May and early June) offers great opportunities for early King salmon with fewer crowds. Fall (September) is excellent for silver salmon fishing. Contact us to discuss fishing conditions for your specific travel dates and we will help you plan the perfect trip.
